Marylanders for Data Center Reform

Formed in 2025, Marylanders for Data Center Reform is a group of 62 environmental organizations and community groups promoting sustainable, transparent, equitable, and accountable data center development by mounting a coordinated campaign to require the industry to reduce and mitigate its extreme energy use, utilize renewable resources, and limit the construction of new fossil fuel power plants. Our coalition recognizes the vital importance of data centers in our society, and we believe that they must be built in a way that mitigates their negative impacts.

Data centersconstructed to meet the surging demand for computing power for artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency and other usesare placing unprecedented strain on the state’s energy grid, land, water resources, and the health of local communities. Data center projects require massive amounts of infrastructure and are often built near neighborhoods, schools, farms, daycares, and local businesses. While data centers serve legitimate needs in modern society, the current pace and unchecked scale of their development threaten ratepayers, environmental goals, and quality of life.

Mission and Goals

Marylanders for Data Center Reform is focused on state level policy and advocacy in Maryland, in collaboration with our local and regional partners. As a coalition, we are deeply concerned about the impacts that data center development will have on communities, habitats, ratepayers, water and air quality, and land use decisions.
