Is your community stream being threatened by development? Pollution a problem? Could your local official do something to help?
Nature Forward offers periodic Watershed Training Workshops for local civic, watershed or environmental groups to help empower successful stewardship and advocacy around local clean water and land conservation issues.
Here’s what participants say about our Advocacy & Stewardship Workshops:
Your Advocacy 201 training helped prepare me to testify before the D.C. Council for the first time, giving me some great tools to put together and deliver good written and oral testimony. Thanks for providing this great resource.
Conor Marshall, Friends of Kingman and Heritage Islands
In my area, as I see the water changing, I want to find the right connection. This has stimulated me to do something.
Barbara Lewis, Master Naturalist
Yesterday’s Conservation Advocacy 101 Workshop was more than I had hoped for. I learned quite a bit and now know the beginning steps to take on an advocacy issue. Thanks, again!
Jane Burner
I work for a small but growing watershed group. We just started to consider what kind of advocacy program to establish. This provided tools to help us.
Tina Rouse, Friends of Cabin John Creek
[The] workshop content was great! I believe that I have new tools to support my advocacy work. The workshop was worth the two hour drive from NOVA.

In addition to conducting workshops and training at our headquarters at Woodend Sanctuary in Chevy Chase, MD, we partner with other groups including churches, synagogues, or mosque groups, community groups, watershed organizations, and others to host training throughout the D.C. metro region. If you want us to let you know about the next workshop or if you’d like to schedule a workshop with your group, please contact us.
Our workshops teach powerful toolkits for moving from upset to action on environmental issues in these polarizing times.

Our workshops teach powerful toolkits for moving from upset to action on environmental issues in these polarizing times. What’s your environmental issue? Widening the Beltway. Lead in school water pipes. Threats to a park. Contributing to the discussion on new development coming to your neighborhood. Fighting climate change at the local level.
No matter the issue, come to Nature Forward’s Advocacy 101 workshop to learn about how YOU can participate and make a difference. We will cover the key introductory advocacy skills of communicating your WHY, connecting environmental solutions with human needs, and introducing campaign skills that allow everyone to bring their strengths to the table:
Researching issues and solutions
Developing an action plan
Communicating with decision-makers
Building coalitions to broaden support for your issue
Bring your own scenario to work with or join to help brainstorm a partner’s. We will work through scenarios, use role-play and group and expert feedback, and actively practice our skills.
What people are saying about our recent 101 Workshops:
“It advised what I’m already involved in by breaking down the structure of how advocacy works, the players, the coalition building, and especially highlighting the hows and whys as a way to focus outcomes.”
“I was very nervous about joining the workshop as it was outside of my comfort zone but it was wonderful! I leaned a lot, found the other participants very supportive, and feel ready to have a go!”
