Plant a Tree at Woodend Nature Sanctuary to:
- Honor someone close to you
- Recognize an accomplishment
- Memorialize a departed loved one
- Celebrate a birthday, anniversary or other significant life event
- Honorees will be added to our Tree Champion Tributes and Tree Champion Donors pages.
Understory Shrub Sapling
These important trees and shrubs provide cover for ground-nesting birds. Understory trees and shrubs are needed throughout our forested areas of Woodend Sanctuary. The names of donors or recipients will be added to our Tree Champion pages.
Canopy Tree Sapling
Canopy trees will be planted in locations across Woodend Sanctuary to provide habitat for wildlife, manage stormwater run-off and provide shade for campers, event guests, and other visitors year-round. The names of donors or recipients will be added to our Tree Champion pages.
Three Canopy Tree Saplings
A variety of native tree species are needed to increase biodiversity in Woodend’s forest. The names of donors or recipients will be added to our Tree Champion pages.
Special Commemoration Tree
Select your own tree from a list of trees available for planting at Woodend Sanctuary. Nature Forward will provide complete maintenance for the first two years after planting and will replace the tree if it dies within five years of planting. The names of donors or recipients will be added to our Tree Champion pages.
Special Planting Ceremony at Woodend
Honor a loved one or celebrate a meaningful moment with an intimate tree planting ceremony at Woodend Nature Sanctuary. These small gatherings, ideal for close family and friends, with up to 15 attendees, offer a peaceful and heartfelt way to mark a special occasion.
Our team will help you choose your tree and select a beautiful location for a warm, personal ceremony centered on reflection, connection, and nature. You’ll receive professional photographs of the planting, and Nature Forward will care for your tree for its first two years, replacing it if it dies within five. Donors or honorees will also be recognized on our Tree Champion web pages.
Note: Special Planting Ceremonies are separate from our contract‑based rental events and do not include venue rentals, event coordination, reception spaces, furniture setup, catering or access to indoor facilities outside regular hours.

Our goal is to increase native biodiversity, while greatly reducing the presence of non-native invasive plants. The restoration of native plant communities will foster the recovery of interrelated environmental systems in the decades to come, including soil health, groundwater recharge and native food webs.
Native tree species to be planted include American Holly (Ilex opaca), Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana), Fringetree (Chionanthus virginicus), Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis), Inkberry (Ilex glabra), and Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana).
We’re excited to watch renewed tree saplings grow and thrive to become a future forest, and nurture the restoration of habitats for native species including shrub-nesting songbirds and the amphibians that require herbaceous cover.
